This monograph illustrates the conception, planning, and building of a unique settlement named Hathigaon, or Elephant village, designed by Rahul Mehrotra architect, for working elephants and their care taking families in the dry and arid city of Jaipur. The book also includes a reflective essay by Rahul Mehrotra. The overall planning approach including project conception and design development centred upon elephant comfort and meaningful animal-human interaction by focusing upon two key questions. The author's purpose is not only to draw out practical insights-that designers working in similar developing contexts may find useful worldwide-but also to examine how settlement planning befitting 21st century design sensibilities might look like in the emergent urban landscape of lndia and south Asia more broadly?
